Mytilene by plane
The fastest and easiest option to reach Mytilene is to book a flight. There is an international airport (MJT) situated 15 minutes drive from the capital city.
Mytilene airport is unique in that you can take a swim while waiting for your plane since it is right across the street from the shore.
Athens to Mytilene
A flight from Athens to Mytilene takes only 50 minutes, and costs from 40€. There are about 2 daily flights to and from Athens, run by Aegean Air and Olympic Air. There are also daily flights from Thessaloniki and other places in Europe.
International flights
It is possible to travel from Paris or London or any eupean capital city to Lesvos in a day, ether through a direct flight to Mytilene, or with a flight including a short transit in Athens or Thessaloniki.
A return flight from Paris or London to Lesvos would cost from 300Euros if booked early.
Flying to Turkey
An other option is to fly to Izmir, Turkey, to reach by bus the turkish port of Ayvalik : there is a regular daily ferry that connect with Mytilene and takes 1h30.
Reaching Mytilene
Mytilene by ferry boats
A cheaper and slower option would be to take a ferry trip from Pireaus (Athens) or Thessaloniki to Mitylene. There are regular ships leaving Pireaus in the evening and arriving in Mytilene early the next morning. Plan to arrive at least one day before the course if you choose this option, as ferry schedules can change until the last minute before departure.
One way from Pireaus costs from 40€ budget option, add an extra 10€ for your own reclining armchair. Shared or private cabins also available from 120€. Buying your ticket before leaving in one of the shops around Pireus port has always work for us, but you can also book online through the ferry companies websites.
The ferry boats that go to Lesvos from Pireaus are : The Mytilini, European Express, Theophilos, Nissos Chios (or the Nissos Mykonos) and the Blue Star Patmos which have bars, restaurants, lounges and cabins. There are usually two boats a day leaving Pireaus for Chios and Mytilini, sometimes more (often over night trip, taking from 8h to 13h). Several days a week the ferry continues on to Limnos, Kavala and Thessaloniki .
Lesvos Island's capital Mytilene can be reach by air or by sea. You are free to choose the best option for you. If you have time, why not take the time to travel around Lesvos or other greek islands, or even to the nearby coast of Turkey ?
